The CW to Emmy Voters: We Exist!

Posted: June 5, 2010 in gossip girl, one tree hill, smallville, supernatural, the cw, the vampire diaries, the wb, thetvaddict articles

I’d like to thank my mom for always believing in and my manager and the entire cast and crew, who work tirelessly, and the CW…

Yeah, you’re probably not going to hear that at the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, but that hasn’t stopped the CW from mounting its first ever Emmy campaign. Earlier this week, Deadline Hollywood Daily posted about the network’s OMFG FYC campaign, which consists of an insert in the new issue of Emmy magazine (see above; more pictures after the jump). Although the OMFG slogan is associated with Gossip Girl — they considered the slogan, “Beautiful people deserve Emmys too,” according to DHD –  the insert also features The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Smallville and Supernatural. All the featured shows are produced by campaign brainchild Warner Bros. TV, which explains the absence of the CBS Television Studios’ 90210 and Life Unexpected, the latter of which I think is more worthy than some of the WBTV shows.

But that’s only if we’re judging Emmy worthiness on a curve because, let’s face it, the CW shows don’t stand a chance. And let’s be honest — some of them, rightfully, doesn’t deserve a chance. But the bigger problem is that the CW has inherited its predecessor’s cloak of invisibility when it comes to the Emmys. Like the WB, it ceases to exist. Not everything on the WB was brilliant, but the fact that shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls and Everwood and their performers went unrecognized is a shame. The network did manage to get some nominations and a win (for Felicity‘s Keri Russell) at the much looser Golden Globe Awards.

While I don’t think that most of the CW shows can compare to the glory days of the WB, least of all Emmy-nominated shows like Mad Men, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some underrated talent on the network. The name that came up more than any other in the DHD comments is Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles and I’m inclined to agree. He’s the one person on the network that I think stacks up against the competition.

Also quite good, although not quite on the level of the Emmys yet, is Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester. I remember being impressed with the depth and sadness she brought to what could have been a superficial role all the way back in the pilot. And where there’s Blair, there’s usually Chuck, but I’m not as big of a fan of Ed Westwick and his whispery approach to the character as some people seem to be.

And this will probably get me some virtual rotten tomatoes, but if there was an award for Best Vampire Show, I’d give it to The Vampire Diaries over True Blood. OK, now I duck for cover. I’d also take Supernatural over Lost any day. The show had an uneven season, but the “Changing Channels” episode was one of the most creative, ambitious and successful episodes I saw this past season (read my review). Smartly, “Channels” was one of the episodes Warner Bros. put up on their Emmy site for consideration. The other was one of Ackles’ best episodes, “The End,” in which he played two versions of the same character. The other submissions:

  • Gossip Girl – “Ex-Husbands and Wives,” “Last Tango, Then Paris”
  • One Tree Hill – “Last Day of Our Acquaintance,” “I And Love And You”
  • Smallville – “Savior,” “Society”
  • The Vampire Diaries – “Pilot” (Really? I’m hoping the “Content unavailable. The requested content has been removed” message means they’re reconsidering their decision.), “Lost Girls” (much better!)

(I’m not so sure the music video-like trailers on the insert’s DVD will appeal to voters, but fans would probably love them. This “O’ Death” trailer is included for Supernatural, but the ones for Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl appear to be new.)

But none of these shows or actors will likely hear their name called when Emmy nominations are announced July 8, except maybe in technical categories. Not only do they have the unfortunate honor of being on a smaller network that’s dismissed by Emmy voters, they also have to contend with the fact that there’s just a lot of damn good television out there. When the excellent Friday Night Lights still isn’t getting recognized, we have bigger fish to fry with Emmy voters. But I guess it’s nice of WBTV and the CW to support their own.

Which CW shows and actors do you think are Emmy-worthy? Or should the CW just sit this one out?

I love the WB for trying but I wished they had focused more on the strength of their shows and trying to sell them as serious competition. I don’t say they are but I think they are hurting their cause by puting stuff like ‘guilty pleasure’ in their descripitions.

Supernatural and Jensen Ackles would totally deserve at least a nomination. I doubt it’s gonna happen but it would be a welcome suprise.

  2. Laura says:

Lead Actor: Paul Wesley “Vampire Diaries”

    Lead Actress Shanae Grimes “90210″

Supporting Actor: Steven R. Mcqueen “Vampire Diaries”

Supporting Actress: Candace Accola “Vampire Diaries”

    Best Drama: “Vampire Diaries”

  3. Sarah says:

Ian Somerhalder 100% deserves an Emmy nomination for his role as Damon and I will be STUNNED if he fails to secure one. It would be brilliant if he also won but that’s unlikely to happen, IMO.

It is just simply amazing how he was able to go from nice to plain nasty in just a flash and it’s easily the best TV performance I’ve seen since Ben Linus was introduced as a character in LOST.

I will be keeping my fingers tightly crossed for him. :-)

    • maria says:

I agree for 100% IAN SOMERHALDER really deserves Emmy award, he is genius, the way he plays demon is fantastic, I will pray for him!!!

  4. Kate says:

Jensen is the only one from CW who really deserves nomination IMO.I’m glad they picked The End and Changing Channels, both are prety good episodes.

  5. Haleh says:

Jensen Ackles Deserve the award for sure!! I don’t know about other actors & actress Cause I only watch Supernatural On CW! but In Comparison to other actors in other Channels surely he deserve the award!! when they nominate Kiefer Sutherland, Patrick Dempsey, Hugh Laurie for million times why wouldn’t at least nominate Jensen Ackles for once!!?! Cause he’s not On a big TV Channel like NBC or ABC or FOX?! It’s not Fair!! :(

  6. Sheri says:

Jensen Ackles is the best male actor on TV today, and he delivers in every single scene. No, the CW and those connected with it won’t be recognized, but I hope this campaign gives him some recognition that will help his career in the future.

  7. KT says:

Jensen Ackles and Supernatural are by far the best things the CW has to offer. Jensen has needed an Emmy for years now! Thanks for therecognition of SPN and Jensen!!! Both well deserved and long overdue!

  8. Aik says:

Jensen Ackles is the best CW actor no doubt there and he deserves Emmy for years now.
And hey, i agree with you about TVD being better than TB :)

  9. Hermit says:

Jensen’s performance in The End should win an emmy if the Emmy board would take the time and energy to view it. Sadly, the people at the emmy seem to be snobbish when it comes to the horror genre. Like actors and actresses can’t act if they are on a syfy/horror show.

If there is any justice, Jensen would win an Emmy for the great performances he’s managed to give in the past five years. He truly is a very talented actor.

  10. rosa says:

Jensen deserves an emmy. He is a briiliant actor, and can drama, comedy, action etc. Crossing fingers that he will not be overlooked this time!

“The End” is among his finest works. However, there is always something worth remembering about Jensens acting in every episode!

  11. Carolyn says:

I have always thought Jensen Ackles was Emmy worthy, as well as the show he plays in. Not many out there can say so much with just the slightest change in expression, is capable of carrying off action, humor, love scenes and convey all the angst and emotions possible without going over the top. I have never seen him give a bad performance on the show and it’s about time he got recognized for being such a great actor.

  12. [...] Tree Hill is among the shows The CW is submitting for Emmy consideration, in addition to Gossip [...]

  13. Cookie6 says:

it’s an injustice that Jensen’s talent is not recognised because he is seen on a smaller network. To dismiss a sbrilliant how and talented actors for this reason is not about merit or due process, it’s about predujice and narrow mindedness. Jensen’s abillity to portray his character with such depth and conviction has been outstanding and he deserves recognition on the same stage as the rest of his peers.
If the CW campaign is successful in at least geting the Emmy’s to see Jensen Ackles, his work will do the rest.

  14. Melanie says:

I would like to see Supernatural nominated and win in one of the technical categories – cinematography, editing, sound, score, special effects — any of them, I’m not picky. I agree that Jensen’s acting deserves an award, but I doubt the emmy voters will look beyond the usual suspects.

  15. Robin Vogel says:

    SUPERNATURAL, best TV drama

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, best dramatic actors

The writers, directors and Eric Kripke all deserve Emmys for their work on SUPERNATURAL.

It’s all political BS, anyway, and I know this will never happen.

It;’s just nice to imagine a DESERVING TV show will win!

    • Darun says:

I agree completely that they all deserve their due. I think the CW is pushing Jensen so much more than Jared because of the huge amounts of Jensen fanatics out there, but Jared does just as well and with a character that isn’t as easy to relate to in later seasons. Jared Padalecki deserves some consideration too for sure.

If Supernatural wins at all I would be amazed, but I just don’t see it happening because of the voters love for the drab and same-old same-old. I may be in the minority, but I require good storyline and acting to like a show and I’ve never really gotten into Mad Men or Lost. Supernatural is a true tragic drama about normal people giving their life and more just to help and save others.

I’m rooting for you Supernatural and everyone involved, but I’m not holding my breath. Just know that us die-hard fans out there will always support you. You’re going to be like Firefly. Not praised by the big wig assbutts but loved by the people.

  16. Simson says:

    hmm let’s see….

2 Shows that deserve nods at the emmys are The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural…. most definitely! I could argue Smallville too after 9 seasons deserving some kind of recognition as a show but its isnt really that strong a show so I wont. But TVD and SN should be in the running as much as the other shows!

    As for actors and actresses….

Lead Actor – Paul Wesley (The Vampire Diaries), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural), Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries), Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl)

Lead Actress – Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill)

Supporting Actor – Matthew Settle (Gossip Girl), Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), Austin Nichols (One Tree Hill)

Supporting Actress – Allison Mack (Smallville), Daphne Zuniga (One Tree Hill), Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl), Melinda Clarke (The Vampire Diaries),

  17. Wil says:

Maybe Supernatural’s amazing production values, writing, and Jensen’s amazing performances will finally be recognized–even if not nominated.

  18. bestshowfan says:

Jensen Ackles is the top talent at the CW. His portrayal of Dean Winchester is so terrific, week in and week out, regardless of the episode plot or quality of the writing, and he absolutely deserves an Emmy. In my opinion, there’s not another actor on any network who can touch him when it comes to sheer talent. The CW doesn’t deserve an actor of this caliber. He’s brilliant at what he does. His performance in “The End” is only one of his award-worthy performances. The episode itself was great. Not a fan of “Changing Channels,” but you just can’t stop watching Dean Winchester!!

  19. Rachel Elisabeth says:

Jensen Ackles deserves to be nominated. It’s unlikely to happen and if he did, by some miracle, I wouldn’t expect him to win but it would be amazing for him to get the recognition he deserves for being an amazing actor who has only grown and grown, for years.

  20. Cindy says:

Jensen Ackles deserves a nomination because for 5 seasons he’s been unbelievably awesome as Dean Winchester and has made that character iconic and real and so well-loved by so many-and he’s easily as good(better than most, IMO) as those who HAVE been nominated in the past. I wish with all my heart that he would get a long overdue nomination.

  21. Candy says:

Jensen should get his emmy now! The End was the best episode of season 5. The rest not so much.

  22. Kim says:

Ian Somerhalder is brilliant. Yes, the CW is geared for teens. Yes, the CW doesn’t really DESERVE an emmy.
But Ian Somerhalder did a stunning job as Damon Salvatore, which little quirks of the eyebrow and great intonation.
A great actor all around; though he will not win the emmy it would be great if he was nominated.

  23. bob says:

jensen ackles cant act for shit. are you guys high?

  24. Ted says:

What’s the matter bob?! Ackles is one hot guy & girls give him much attention and you’re jealous or something? lol…BTW your comment was funny! tnx man. made me laugh! you like that twilight dude, Pattison o s.th!? huh?! Cause he deserve Oscar for sure!*smirk* he’s hell of an actor!!HAH!

  25. [...] few days later, Vlada of TV blog Staying In provided more detail about the OMFG FYC insert, mentioning that the network had submitted the Vampire Diaries Pilot and Lost Girls. Vlada had this [...]

  26. Nina says:

IAN SOMERHALDER definately deserves the nominee of best actor for his role of DAMON!!! he is the most talented actor I’ve ever seen in TV series!!! and in my opinion he actually make the show of vampire diaries without him the show would be boring and uninteresting!!!

  27. Nina says:

IAN SOMERHALDER is genius! he deserves Emmy award!!! he is the best actor on CW and not only on CW

I’ll pray for you IAN !!!

  28. Emma says:

Smallville should get some recognition for having the staying power of 9 years on air!!!!

  29. Sarah says:

    Supernatural!!!!!!!!!!

  30. rosa says:

Jensen is the best tv actor nowadays! He deserves an emmy!

  31. jo says:

Bob’s right. Jensen can’t act for shit. And the rest of you…stop getting all Twilight over the guy.

  32. Nato says:

ehem the twilight comment was no doubt a joke seeing as the movies (and the books) suck ass… and to any who say Jensen can’t act try watching every episode of season 2 (the best in my opinion) I guarantee you won’t be disappointed by a single episode they’re all just THAT good (I’m currently re watching the whole series nonstop back to back thats how strongly I love the show) Supernatural has deserved an emmy for a long time coming, hope they finally get one.

  33. Ginger says:

Jensen Ackles was nominated three times for a daytime emmy when he was on “Days of our Lives.” He deserves it for sure now. He has just gotten better and better. He did win the soap opera digest award. So a primetime emmy nomination is way past due for him. They recognized him back then- he was on NBC. Lack of recogition now just comes with the CW and genre of the show- which is totally unfair and somewhat discriminating.

  34. CB says:

    Gossip Girl deserves EMMY!!

  35. Just Me says:

I think the only good shows on The CW are “Nikita” and “Gossip Girl”.

“Nikita” is quite interesting and well plotted but it’s not Emmy material just yet, because the characters just seem a bit too one-sided, they’re either very bad guys or very good guys. Maybe when the show starts working on that it may be worth a nomination.

“Gossip Girl” on the otehr hand is Emmy-worthy. Completly. And not only the show with the great plot-lines multi-multi-multi dimmensional characters and witty lines, the actors too. Here’s my list of the one’s doing a great job on the show:

Blake Lively as Serena van der Woodsen.
Explanation: Usually Serena doesn’t come off as a good character, but now that her search and struggles for morality reached a great plot-line, she’s an even better character and Blake pulls off the simpathy and the guts to try and help Ben out of jail. Congrats for Blake.

    Penn Badgley as Dan Humphrey.
Explanation: I’ve never been a really huge fan of Dan, but this season he just seems more mature and Badgley manages to pull of Dan’s storylines. He may not be worthy of winning an Emmy yet but I think I would make him a nomination.

    Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf.
Explanation: Not only should Meester get nominated, she should also win. She’s an amazing actress and her character has so many sides, and she pulls them off perfectly, balances them, keeps them together and wraps it all up in the beauty that is Blair Waldorf.
