Didn’t See That One Coming!

Posted: October 31, 2007 in dollhouse, heroes, the office

This week has produced more than its fair share of surprise announcements about our TV favorites:

1.) Fresh off the presses: TV Guide is reporting that Joss Whedon is coming back to TV and the one who lured him is none other than former slayer Eliza Dushku! The new FOX series is called Dollhouse (great title!) and already has a seven episode order. Please don’t put this on Fridays at 9 p.m., FOX.

2.) Another tidbit from TV Guide, but this one smells like desperation. NBC is reportedly developing a spin-off of The Office. The new series would not use any of the current cast. Instead, some new characters would be introduced this season a la Private Practice. Producers are looking to cast a “name” for the main role. Any suggestions?

3.) As one spin-off is born, another dies. Heroes: Origins appears to be the first casualty of a possible writers’ strike. The series has been put on the back burner by NBC, according to, yes, TV Guide. Can’t say I’m terribly disappointed. While I appreciated NBC’s efforts to reduce the number of reruns and breaks between new episodes, perhaps they could focus their attention on the floundering series that started it all instead?

    Re: Heroes

I’ve actually really enjoyed this season for what it is. Heroes will never be THE.BEST.THING.EVER but it’s still damn entertaining. I learned not to get too involved with a television show anymore–thanks to Alias. SPN nonwithstanding.

    Re: Joss Whedon

While I appreciate him for Firefly and Angel–I never thought the man was the second coming to television. So, another Joss show? Zzzz..wake me up when its canceled. It is going to FUX right? ;)

I never thought Heroes was brilliant TV either. But last season was fun and different. This one? Not so much. The writing is sloppy and redundant. Some scenes honestly make me wring. The stories don’t even seem to be moving.

Re Joss: There is something about the way he writers characters that absolutely guts me. He gets human emotion and metaphor better than almost any other TV writers I’ve encounter, imo.

Sadly, I do have the same fear about the show being on FOX, but the network seems to be behind it, already ordering seven episodes, and Joss has said that it’s a whole new group of people there now.

I can understand people’s fustration with Heroes. I totally get it. I feel that a lot of what’s going on should’ve already been taken care of. I seem to remember this being the same issue last season as well. I’m waiting for that episode to bring it all together.

    Re: Joss.

He killed Wash. I’m still bitter. LOL.
